Frequently asked questions

What is colocation?
Colocation, sometimes called colo, is the practice of renting space, power, and cooling in a third-party data center to house your own servers and networking equipment. Instead of building and operating your own facility, you place your hardware in a shared, professionally managed colocation data center. You retain full control of your equipment and data while benefiting from enterprise-grade colocation services, security, connectivity, and 24x7 support.
What sizes of colocation space does Iron Mountain offer?
We offer data center colocation solutions for every scale, from a single server or cabinet to hyperscale campuses. Our data centers and colocation offerings include individual colocation cabinets and racks, data center cages for multi-cabinet deployments, private suites, modular data centers (MODs), and fully customized build-to-suit facilities. Whatever your space and power requirements, we can size a solution to fit.
What is the difference between a colocation cabinet, cage, duite, and MOD?
A cabinet (or rack) is the most compact colocation option. It’s ideal for smaller multi-server colocation deployments. A cage is a physically enclosed section of the data floor housing six or more cabinets, providing more space and privacy. A suite is a fully private room within the facility, offering a dedicated data center feel with greater configuration flexibility. A Modular Data Center (MOD) is a purpose-built, high-density enclosure that provides an additional layer of physical security, higher performance, and rapid scalability. It’s available in select strategic markets.
How much does colocation cost?
Colocation pricing varies depending on the amount of space, power, and services required, as well as the location and term of your agreement. Factors that affect colocation cost include power draw per cabinet or suite, cooling requirements, connectivity needs, and the level of additional services you select. Contact our team for a tailored colocation quote based on your specific requirements.
What security & compliance certifications do Iron Mountain Data Centers hold?
Iron Mountain Data Centers operates the industry's most comprehensive colocation compliance program. Our certifications span information security, energy and environmental management, healthcare, financial services, and government frameworks — including ISO 27001, ISO 22301, ISO 50001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, PCI-DSS, HIPAA, HITRUST CSF, FedRAMP, FISMA High, and NIST SP 800-53. We are the only colocation provider to certify our entire global portfolio with ISO 50001 and ISO 14001, and we were the first data center provider in North America to achieve BREEAM certification. Security and compliance standards are applied uniformly across our entire worldwide portfolio.
Are Iron Mountain Data Centers AI-ready?
Yes. Our newest colocation facilities are designed to support the full spectrum of AI infrastructure — from large-scale training environments requiring high power density and liquid cooling, to distributed inference deployments where low latency and network connectivity are critical. We currently support scalable power and density options with both air and liquid cooling, with up to 200 kW per rack being piloted at our Virginia facilities. Our global development pipeline, currently 1.4 GW+, with a program to double by 2030, is being built to accommodate the evolving demands of AI training and inference infrastructure worldwide.
